Solar Battery Price in India 2026: Types, Cost & How to Choose
Solar battery prices in India for 2026 — lithium vs lead-acid vs tubular, cost per kWh, lifespan, and how to size a battery for home backup. Plain-English buyer's guide.
Short answer: In India in 2026, solar batteries cost roughly ₹12,000–₹18,000 per kWh for lithium (LiFePO4) and ₹8,000–₹14,000 for tubular lead-acid. Lithium costs more upfront but lasts 2–3× longer and is now the smart choice for most homes adding backup to a hybrid solar system.
Solar battery types & prices (2026)
| Battery type | Approx. price | Lifespan | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tubular lead-acid | ₹8,000–14,000/kWh | 3–5 yrs | tight budget, occasional backup |
| Lithium (LiFePO4) | ₹12,000–18,000/kWh | 8–12 yrs | most homes, daily cycling |
| Advanced lithium (modular) | ₹16,000–22,000/kWh | 10–15 yrs | premium, scalable setups |
Prices vary with brand, capacity and warranty. A typical home backup battery is 5–10 kWh.
Lithium vs lead-acid — which is worth it?
- Lithium (LiFePO4): higher upfront, but lasts 8–12 years, deeper usable capacity (~90% vs ~50% for lead-acid), lighter, near-zero maintenance. Lower cost per usable cycle — the better long-term value for daily use.
- Tubular lead-acid: cheaper to buy, but shorter life, needs ventilation and topping-up, and you can only safely use ~half its rated capacity. Fine for occasional backup on a tight budget.
For a battery you’ll cycle every day, lithium almost always wins on lifetime cost.
How to size your solar battery
Work out the loads you need during a power cut (not your whole home):
- Lights + fans + TV + Wi-Fi + fridge ≈ 1–2 kWh for a few hours → a 3–5 kWh battery
- Add AC backup → 8–10 kWh+
Oversizing wastes money; undersizing leaves you short. A site survey sizes it to your actual outage needs.
Do you even need a battery?
If your grid is reliable, an on-grid system with no battery is cheaper and still subsidised — you simply draw from the grid at night. Add a battery (making it hybrid) only if power cuts are frequent. We explain the trade-off in on-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid.
Common mistakes
- Buying lead-acid to save money for daily-use backup — you replace it 2–3× while one lithium lasts.
- Sizing the battery to the whole house instead of just outage-critical loads.
- Ignoring depth-of-discharge — lead-acid’s usable capacity is ~half the rating.
- No warranty check — insist on cycle-life and years in writing.
