On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar (2026): Which Is Right for You?
On-grid, off-grid or hybrid solar — which system should you install? Compare cost, battery needs, power-cut backup, net metering and subsidy eligibility for Indian homes.
Short answer: For most Indian homes with a reliable grid connection, an on-grid system is the best value — it’s the cheapest, qualifies for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, and earns net-metering credits. Choose hybrid if you want power-cut backup and subsidy benefits. Go off-grid only where there’s no grid at all. Here’s how to decide.
The three system types
On-grid (grid-tied) — best for most homes
Connected to the DISCOM grid, no batteries. Surplus daytime power is exported for net-metering credits; you draw from the grid at night.
- Cost: lowest (no batteries)
- Power-cut backup: ❌ none (shuts off during outages for safety)
- Subsidy: ✅ eligible for PM Surya Ghar
- Best for: homes with a stable grid connection who want maximum savings
Off-grid — for no-grid locations
Fully independent with battery storage; no grid connection.
- Cost: high (large battery bank)
- Power-cut backup: ✅ full independence
- Subsidy: usually ❌ not under the standard grid-connected scheme
- Best for: remote farms, areas with no grid
Hybrid — best of both
Grid-connected plus battery storage. Runs the home, charges batteries, exports surplus, and switches to battery during outages.
- Cost: highest (panels + inverter + batteries)
- Power-cut backup: ✅ yes
- Subsidy: ✅ eligible (grid-connected portion)
- Best for: homes with frequent power cuts who still want savings + subsidy
Comparison table
| Feature | On-grid | Off-grid | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | No | Yes (large) | Yes |
| Power-cut backup | No | Yes | Yes |
| Net metering | Yes | No | Yes |
| PM Surya Ghar subsidy | Yes | No | Yes |
| Relative cost | ₹ | ₹₹₹ | ₹₹₹ |
| Best for | stable grid | no grid | frequent cuts |
Which should you choose?
- Stable electricity, want max savings → On-grid. Cheapest, subsidised, net-metered.
- Frequent power cuts, want backup + savings → Hybrid. Costs more but you stay powered during outages.
- No grid (remote site) → Off-grid. The only option, but plan for battery replacement costs.
For most Bhopal/MP homes with a working MPMKVVCL connection, on-grid is the smart default — and you can add a small battery later if cuts become an issue. See our rooftop solar service and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy guide.
Common mistakes
- Buying off-grid “for safety” when the grid is fine — you pay for an expensive battery bank you don’t need and may lose subsidy eligibility.
- Expecting on-grid to work during a power cut — it won’t; that’s a safety feature, not a fault.
- Undersizing hybrid batteries — size the battery to the loads you actually need during an outage.
- Ignoring battery lifespan — batteries last ~5–10 years vs 25 for panels; budget for replacement.
