Solar Panel Subsidy in India 2026: PM Surya Ghar Amounts & How to Claim

How much solar subsidy can you get in India in 2026? Full PM Surya Ghar amounts by system size, eligibility, the step-by-step claim process, and common mistakes.

Short answer: Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Indian households get a central subsidy of ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above (the cap). The subsidy is credited directly to your bank account after installation and inspection — not deducted by the vendor. Here’s exactly how it works and how to claim it.

Solar subsidy amounts in India (2026)

System sizeCentral subsidyTypical home
1 kW₹30,0001 BHK / very small load
2 kW₹60,0002 BHK
3 kW and above₹78,000 (maximum)most homes

The subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 — systems larger than 3 kW still receive ₹78,000, not more. Some states add their own top-up; check your DISCOM.

Who is eligible?

  • You must be a residential electricity consumer (the scheme is for homes, not commercial — businesses follow different rules; see our commercial solar page).
  • You need a valid electricity connection and the roof rights.
  • The system must be installed by a vendor empanelled with your DISCOM and registered on the national portal.
  • Net metering must be applied for through your DISCOM.

How to claim the solar subsidy — step by step

  1. Register on the PM Surya Ghar national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) with your electricity consumer number.
  2. Apply for feasibility approval from your DISCOM.
  3. Install through an empanelled vendor once approved.
  4. Apply for net metering — the DISCOM installs a bidirectional meter.
  5. Inspection & commissioning by the DISCOM.
  6. Submit bank details on the portal — subsidy is credited to your account within ~30 days.

In Madhya Pradesh, the DISCOM is MPMKVVCL/MPPKVVCL — we cover the MP-specific flow in our PM Surya Ghar Bhopal guide.

Important: the subsidy goes to YOU

A common trap: some vendors quote an inflated price and “adjust” the subsidy, so it never reaches your account. With a trustworthy installer, you pay the system cost, the subsidy lands in your bank account, and the maths is transparent. Always confirm this in writing.

Common mistakes when claiming solar subsidy

  1. Using an unempanelled vendor — disqualifies you from the subsidy entirely.
  2. Skipping net metering — required for the subsidy and for exporting surplus power.
  3. Letting the vendor “keep” the subsidy — it’s legally yours, credited to your account.
  4. Wrong system sizing — going 2 kW when 3 kW earns ₹18,000 more subsidy.
  5. Incomplete portal application — missing documents delay the credit.
